Angel, oil on canvas, 200 x 170cm, 2014 (Woolwich, London) Bilateral brush strokes, painting the sunset and clouds across the Thames that I’d seen when cycling between my home in New Cross and the studio in Woolwich. I was up and down the Thames River a lot in 2014. This could seem like a fairly traditional landscape painting, other than the suped up colours that you might expect from an instagram filter and the damaged surface areas. Wave, acrylic paint and spray paint on canvas, 50x50 cm, 2014, London Two different waves made with acrylic paint on canvas. Little Green One, acrylic paint on canvas, 30x30cm, 2014
'Little Pink Ones' oil paint on canvas. Three 20x20cm made in Woolwich, London 2014 It was enjoyable to use only oil paint, indulging in the texture and relative simplicity, whilst continuing the 'Displaced Triptych' (2013) theme combined with 'Step by Step'. Paint moved between the canvases, influenced by thoughts around migration whilst sharing some of the processes of making the paintings. Little Pink Ones detail, oil paint on canvas. 2014
Communication and sharing across distances, borders and divides. Blood letter and Swimming letter included inks and gold leaf, varnish, foils and paper. Two swimming pieces and swimming letter went to new homes. Earlier on (in Beirut in 2012) four pieces also found their own homes. Above is a detail from one of the swimming pieces that flew. Exchanges using the postal service and internet were significant in this part of the body of work. Floripa: swimming with Luiz, oil paint, spray paint, foils, acrylic, silver leaf, metallic ink, glass paint, varnish and powdered pigment. 190x130cm, 2014 Following making Red Line I made a new painting to embed a beautiful memory from Brazil, where I'd surrounded myself with green plants and water. This painting took about a year to complete; oil paints were used with bilateral brush strokes for the sky and sand, then a real mix for the water. Spray paints, foils, gold and silver leaf, water based paints, chalk, pastels, varnish and raw pigments all made it in. I started this in Bermondsey and completed it from a new studio in Woolwich, London. Six smaller paintings moving between recent pieces (2013) and a greener family of new work were made alongside this wave. B&W, acrylic, spray paint, 50x61cm and 50x40cm with 3cm gap, 2013-2014 At this point I was getting ready to go to Brazil and make ‘Red Line’ in public space. Feeling ready to make a different set of paintings but not yet sure what they would be. I was hoping to see lots of bright colours. Detail B&W, acrylic, spray paint, 2013-2014
Rain or Star, oil on canvas, mixed the paint with pigments, linseed oil, wax, and turpentine. 30x30cm, 2014
This one has a song with it, influenced by "Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep" a poem written in 1932 by Mary Elizabeth Frye. Apparently she wrote it on scraps of paper and gave it out unsigned.
The song came about in Bermondsey / New Cross, 2013 and the painting in Woolwich, London, 2014. There are a few lines missing, but if I record another one with them in - practiced - I expect it will be more awkward. This is from a quiet Sunday in March 2018, five years on from when I first played it and some years since I last did.
Purple Strippen aka big purple, acrylic, varnish, glass paint, emulsion, foil, spray paint on canvas, 100x100m, 2013 Purple Strippen aka big purple. The purple inks, paints and white aerosols combined with more direct and controlled ripping of the canvas than in More Alike. Underwater scenes form the base layer. Whilst making these paintings I was singing a fair bit, it's just something I do quite randomly and often. "Rain or Star" formed walking to and fro from the studio to my home, accompanied by autumn leaves. I tried remembering it as part of re-visiting these paintings (five years later) and did catch a bit. I'm uploading it to vimeo as I type. The painting that shares the same name was made a bit later.
