The 3×3 Index
Painting pricing framework
The 3x3 index is a consistent numerical pricing system. Each painting is positioned within a framework where value is derived rather than assigned. The system reflects a relationship between scale, repetition, and time.
Method
The dimensions of each painting (cm) are used to calculate surface area. Surface area is reduced by a factor of 3×3 (9), reflecting a structural principle within L.A.Simmons painting practice. The result is adjusted according to the year of acquisition expressed as a decimal (eg 2026, is 2.6)
Formula
Price = (Height × Width ÷ 9) × Year Factor
Example
100 × 50 cm Area = 5,000
5,000 ÷ 9 = 555.56
555.56 × 2.6 = €1,444 (£1,251)
The price is not assigned, but derived—emerging from dimension, repetition and time.
The 3×3 Index governs primary transactions only. Once a painting enters circulation beyond the art studio (eg. gallery or resales), it’s valuation is no longer dependent on this system.
